Our Background

Our background includes physics, biology and philosophy and we work on agent behavior and intelligence. Before working with a specific mathematical model and examining its ability to produce meaningful solutions, we examine the mechanics and limitations of the underlying language. This meta-analysis allows us to uncover new mechanisms and organizing principles.

The IIS Cosmological Project

Agent behavior and intelligence is embedded in space and time and hence governed by the fundamental principles of nature. Cosmological and evolutionary models as well as insights into the transition to life have thriven over the last decades and exciting results have been unraveled. It has become clear that any such model needs to grasp "everything" including the impact induced by intelligent creatures. The question now is how to describe agent behavior and intelligence, that has emerged from within our universe, with the fundamental laws of nature without referring to a background structure. Or, as Murray Gell-Mann puts it:

“Today the network of relationships linking the human race to itself and to the rest of the biosphere is so complex that all aspects affect all others to an extraordinary degree. Someone should be studying the whole system, however crudely that has to be done, because no gluing together of partial studies of a complex non-linear system can give a good idea of the behavior of the whole.”

The IIS Medicine Project

What does medicine have to do with cosmology? Experimental evidence points to the fact that carbon-based life has emerged around 3.9 bn years ago with its boundary conditions imposed by an expanding universe along with all the implications that come along with it. The primeval configuration of physical and chemical processes on the early earth have spurred the emergence of a machinery called life that creates new forms of matter and has evolved via heritable variation and natural selection ever since. The singular feature that connects life to cosmology and with it to the fundamental principles of physics is the apparent periodically-nested structure of agent-and-ensemble behavior that spans from inanimate to animate matter and hence, to life itself. It is this ubiquitous characteristic of nature and the universe we live in, that lays the foundations for an understanding of the fundamental operational features of life.

Medicine has forever hoped to be blessed with the knowledge of fundamental principles of life upon which a holistic treatment, instead of the wide-spread symptomatic approach to therapy, would be possible. We work on an integrated, etiological approach to medical treatment based on a life mechanics, stemming from the underlying, fundamental principles of nature. Our insights provide the foundation to all established and practiced forms of treatments and we develop first principles and possible approaches towards non-symptomatic therapy.
